I am Wanjiku, and I have a story to tell. It's a story that still haunts me to this day, a story of how I was lured into a cult in Kenya and subjected to horrific experiences that have scarred me for life.(Read also Understanding the Psychology of Cults ,The Danger of Cults Characteristics and Warning Signs)
It all started when I was at my lowest point. I had just lost my job and was struggling to make ends meet. I felt lost and alone, and I was desperately searching for something to give my life meaning. That's when I met a group of people who called themselves a community of like-minded individuals working towards a greater purpose. They seemed friendly and welcoming, and I was drawn to their promises of helping me find my place in the world. At first, everything seemed harmless enough. The members of the cult were warm and welcoming, and they promised to help me find a sense of purpose in life. They told me that they were a community of like-minded people who were working together to achieve a greater good.
But as time went on, I began to notice that things weren't quite right. The members of the cult became increasingly secretive, and I was forbidden from talking to anyone outside of the group. They also began to pressure me into making financial contributions, which I later realized were being used to fund the cult's activities.I tried to leave the cult, but they had already sunk their claws into me. They told me that leaving the group would mean that I was abandoning my purpose and that I would be letting down the other members. They told me that I was part of a chosen group that was destined to save the world, and that I had to be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve our mission.

That's when the horrors began. We were forced to undergo grueling physical and mental exercises, designed to break us down and mold us into compliant servants. We were also subjected to psychological manipulation and brainwashing, designed to erase our sense of self and replace it with blind devotion to the cult. The worst experience came when I was selected to undergo a ritual. They told me that it was necessary for me to prove my loyalty to the group. I was blindfolded and taken to a dark room, where I was subjected to unspeakable acts. I can't even bring myself to describe what happened, but it was the most horrific experience of my life.
After that, I knew I had to leave. I was lucky enough to escape, but the trauma I experienced has never left me. I was so traumatized by the experience that I couldn't even bring myself to talk about it with anyone. I felt like I was carrying a dark secret that I would never be able to share with anyone.
For years, I tried to bury the memories and move on with my life. I tried to convince myself that it was all just a bad dream and that I had imagined everything. But the trauma was always there, lurking just beneath the surface. It wasn't until a friend from outside the group began to express concern for my well-being that I began to question my involvement in the cult. She saw the changes in me and knew that something was wrong. She encouraged me to seek help and to talk about my experiences with someone who could understand.
At first, I was hesitant to open up. I didn't want to relive the trauma or to admit that I had been a victim. But eventually, I realized that I needed help. I reached out to a therapist who specialized in cult recovery, and slowly but surely, I began to unravel the layers of trauma that had been holding me back for so long.Through therapy, I began to understand the tactics that cults use to manipulate and control their members. I learned how they exploit vulnerable people and prey on those who are searching for a sense of purpose in life
